the cold wind is piercing.
the snow falls at an unrelenting rate.
still, you persist. you tread through the snow, sniffing out your shelter for the long night.
you are a [[GOOD BOY. |name]]
what do you do?
[[LOOK AROUND.]]
[[CONTINUE FORWARD.]]
[[GO BACK.]]you don't know what that means. it was just the noise the human mouthed whenever beckoning you. it took a while to wrap your head around what it was saying (you didn't encounter humans enough, and found their noises weird) but it felt good to be called that.
[[sometimes, you dream that you'll be called that again.|intro]]you are in a [[dense and thick forest|born]]. it has been snowing nonstop for the past day. the cold months have begun, and today has been especially freezing.
your paws leave deep holes in the white ground. attempts to sniff out the area are futile - the wind carries scent too far and fast away from you to catch anything. not like you'd be able to - you haven't seen anything else out here in awhile.
it seems like you're the last to find shelter for the incoming snow storm.
you shake. the longer you continue to stand here, the closer you'll get to freezing to death. you need to move on.
[[CONTINUE FORWARD.]]
[[GO BACK.]]you continue forward. you have no time to sit around, not while the snow continues to grow. you must find shelter soon before the storm gets any worse.
along your path you see a [[SHIFTING TREE]], a [[DEAD RABBIT]], and a [[BENT POST]].
all catch your interest, but none of these provide much in terms of warmth. you move along, the fur on your back raising as the wind grows stronger.
[[KEEP WALKING.]]you stop in your tracks. you look back, towards the prints you've left in the ground. they're already being filled by the falling snow.
moving further could bring you closer to the pillars that guard the city. you've stayed away from that place as long as you've been alive.
the wind grows harsher. staying here is not an option - you must find shelter tonight.
and yet, the worry of moving too closely to the city pulls at you.
[[GO BACK.|ENDING 1: COWARD.]]
[[CONTINUE FORWARD.]]factory + town is where you realize that humans were turned to dogs??? maybe?? youre one of these dog humans too but you really dont remember/realize.
FOREST
story starts off w dog running/walking around, options to figure out path
option to go forward advances story
option to stay back and Die early but thats no fun
if you go forward the dog hears something in distance. dog can either choose to follow it or go down the same path
DOG PATH
if you follow the noise you move into a more dense area of the forest. before dog decides to move back they see another dog in the distance. chance to move back and go the other way or to follow this dog
if you follow the new dog he kind of runs away from you until you show youre friendly Or show youre mean.
if you show youre friendly he plays w/ u and follows u from afar
if you show youre mean he fucks off for the rest of the game
decision to either keep following and continue cycle or fuck off and leave the dog
CONTINUE DOWN PATH (with or without dog)
continuing down the path leads you to an abandoned house. ur surprised by this house since its so far off from the rest of the town but not Too surprised its abandoned since no humans have been here for a while. you investigate the house
you find implications of a human here. several? you dont know but you can smell the human who named you. you search around for more clues and see a note. you cant read obviously but one word looks kind of familiar? "factory". u take a Whiff around the room and find smth to guide you to the factory
FACTORY PATH
along the path you see a deer. kind of. it looks weird.
you can either move ahead or take a closer look
taking a closer look can kill you - if you move closer but scare the deer it leaves you be, if you leave the deer it follows you
you continue into the town
TOWN
continuing into the town towards the factory is Eery. you feel a little sick as you're not used to heavier radiation but you persist. you can encounter other dogs who're aggressive towards you especially as you move further to the factory. some dogs dont look right but theyre less aggro
you meet the white dog again if you werent mean to it. it wants to play...? you can either play with it or tell it to fuck off but it persists. it doesnt want you moving into the factory. you have to either way to find your human. you can either growl at the dog or straight up attack it. it will fuck off permanently if you bite it but itll be just Sad if you dont
FACTORY
you walk into the factory. you can explore the floors. you hear echoes of. something
suddenly you hear a human
your human
you look for him
you eventually find him, hes happy to see you and beckons you
he looks weirder the closer you get to him
if you choose to leave before then you just leave the area All Together. alone. something might be following you but you dont care
if you choose to continue you see another dog pop up behind him. wtf thats YOUR human
more dogs pop up
more Limbs pop up
uh oh
RUN
you must run from the factory. avoid amalgamation dogs as they try to make you apart of them
the weird dogs you saw earlier will also try to trap you
if you were nice to the white dog, you hear a bark in the distance. its calling to you. its trying to save you. you choose to follow it, the other aggressive dogs attacking algamations that pop up. you try to look back but the other dog pulls you away
the two of you leave together. you continue to tread through the forest and look for shelter. together
if you werent nice to the dog. well. you escape but something follows you. you dont care.
there's a post along the path you follow. the metal bends in the middle, the triangular sign pointing towards the ground. you tilt your neck to try and get a clearer image of what's on it.
the symbol is strange. you can't really understand what it means - you think you recognize it, tracing your thoughts to years back, but your memory's too foggy right now to really tell. either way, it seems going further this direction will pull you closer to the pillars, and the city beyond them.
you don't want to risk heading there, but perhaps you'll find another road along the way.
[[you tread along.|CONTINUE FORWARD.]]the rotten scent fills your nostrils. it's disgusting, having lied here for hours, maybe a day or two by now. it's freezing over, the open flesh speckled with frost and the maggots that were crawling inside completely still.
your stomach growls.
you consider, for a moment. finding food is difficult, especially in the winter. would taking the risk be worth it?
[[TAKE A WHIFF.]]the path is intersected by a large, gnarled tree. the roots and trunk are overgrown, twisting and digging into the ground. the earth it lays in is raised, clearly overstuffed by this massive tree. no leaves grow among it. nor fungi. nor moss. nor anything else that could possibly make a home of it. it's not uncommon to not see any signs of life during the winter, but the tree remains this way regardless of the season.
it seems like an aftereffect of the accident that occured years back. long before you were born, but you can recall your old friend stopping by this landmark often, studying it closely. even you can tell this isn't any ordinary tree, but it seems that way for every other one in the area.
[[you really don't like stopping by here that often.|CONTINUE FORWARD.]]you come across a clearing amongst the trees. the twisting roots and branches present two clear roads to choose from, one moving towards the east and the other towards the west.
the eastern path grows darker in the distance, covered in sharp branches and thorns. it doesn't look like you'll be able to get through here.
the western path is clearer. it seems practically empty, but easier to traverse.
[[YOU TURN TOWARDS THE WESTERN PATH,]]you begin to tread forward, but the air is filled with something new.
someone new.
your head whips around towards the eastern path. a familiar silhouette enters your vision.
another dog.
[[FOLLOW IT DOWN THE EASTERN PATH.]]
[[CONTINUE DOWN THE WESTERN PATH.]]another dog is not a good sign for you. you're a lone animal. you've avoided others for most of your life. you do not want to share your shelter, let alone fight for it if needed.
and yet, you move towards it. just to get a closer look.
it barks and turns away, heading further down the path. for a second, you almost leave it. but you hear that bark again, further away now. is it beckoning you?
[[TREAD DOWN THE THORNY PATH.]]you don't have time to worry about another dog. it's probably just a pup who lost their way from their pack, or an exile, or something else that doesn't concern you. the eastern path is too risky to follow them down anyways. (if: (history:) contains "TREAD DOWN THE THORNY PATH")[you turn back, before you can get any more scratched up. you've wasted enough time on this.]
you continue down the western path. the trees grow thinner and thinner as you head further in. you're not sure if this is a good sign; surely it's less populated, but it could be closer to the pillars than you'd like.
[[TURN BACK?]]you begin to turn. going towards the pillars is the last thing you want to do. you must avoid it at any cost. you'd have better luck retracing your path and looking for shelter elsewhere.
you swing your body leftwards.
[[YOU STOP.]]you follow the dog. you're careful to avoid the sharp branches around, making sure you aren't struck in your chase.
the dog seems relentless in its path, taking no pause as they walk along. you grow more and more frustrated. is it taking you somewhere? is it trying to shake you off? does it even notice you're there?
[[TURN BACK. |CONTINUE DOWN THE WESTERN PATH.]]
[[SUDDENLY, A CLEARING.]]the branches become less thick and sharp. it seems you're exiting this thorny burrow, mostly unscratched. instead, you enter another clearing. fallen trees fill the area - it seems this place was abandoned by humans as well.
the dog stops in its tracks. you do the same. it looks back at you.
[[BARK AT IT.]]
[[LOWER YOUR HEAD.]]
you bark at it. he tilts his head, confused. he barks back, baring his teeth.
this is not a good sign.
you bark again. and again. growing more frequent and aggressive, you lower yourself into a more defensive position.
you were never one to trust others. especially other dogs.
[[CONTINUE BARKING. MARK YOUR TERRITORY.]]he...doesn't seem aggressive. you don't think he'll attack you. you don't want to attack him. you've wasted enough time on this, but you want to get out of this interaction without any enemies, in case he isn't alone.
you bow your head. you can't tell how he'll react to this. you hear the soft crunch of snow, and warmth as he comes closer.
[[LOWER YOUR EARS.]]you're striken with a sense of anxiety. for a moment, you're worried - will he attack?
[[YOU FEEL...]]a tongue. on the bridge of your snout. you raise your head slightly to get a better look - the dog is panting, wagging his tail. he continues, sniffing you in friendly greeting.
you. don't really know how to respond. you're a lone dog. you've never had to interact with another like this before.
you mimic your new friend, though poorly. he doesn't seem to mind. finally, he backs away, sitting in front of you. you're still confused on what to do, but it seems like you'll be fine if you keep going. it looks like there's a path further ahead.
[[BEGIN MOVING FORWARD.]]this forest is, admittedly, all you've ever known. the thick bark and dark leaves have been a constant since you were a pup. not much else is out here; you don't bother to explore any further than the edges, towards the large pillars that seperate nature from industrial. you have everything you need in these woods.
[[you hope you'll find shelter here tonight. coming any closer to the strange structures past the pillars will only bring trouble.|LOOK AROUND.]]you see a structure made of wood in the distance. it's shabby, but still holds up against the harsh wind and cold.
it's held up, after all this time.
you feel an ache in your belly.
[[HEAD INTO THE CABIN.]]there's no clear entrance into the building, with the door locked from the outside. there is, however, a hole you can enter through. the cabin is in the process of falling apart, but the foundations still hold up.
it's much warmer inside, thankfully. although abandoned, much of the furniture and objects left by the previous inhabitants are still in tact. you could probably make shelter here, at least until the storm clears up.
even as you settle in, the knot in your stomach still hasnt untied. you're filled with memories of your old friend.
maybe looking around could settle you.
[[CHECK THE BED.]]
[[CHECK THE SHELVES.]]
[[CHECK THE TABLE.]]
[[CHECK THE FIREPLACE.]]
[[CHECK THE SHOES.]]you hop onto the bed. the furs and woolen blankets covering it provide a deep warmth. you jitter, getting used to it after being in the cold for so long.
you were never really allowed on the bed. only on the floor. some nights though, your friend would call for you in his sleep. you didn't want to take the risk of climbing in and making him angry, but you would move to the foot of the bed to rest. it was close enough.
[[you lay for a while, but cannot fall asleep.|HEAD INTO THE CABIN.]]you check the shelves. the cabin was cleared of his personal items, but a few books do remain. you aren't able to read any of them, of course, but you recognize the covers. many of them seemed to be important.
you remember tearing one apart one day, when your friend was out. he scolded you for doing so. you were so worried about him being angry, you didn't visit for a few days. eventually you returned, after no luck of finding any food - maybe he'd take pity on you?
[[you couldn't tell what he was saying when he scolded you while opening the tin can to feed you, but he seemed glad you were back.|HEAD INTO THE CABIN.]]you move towards the table. it seems a large amount of documents remain.
odd. your friend's absense was sudden, but you thought he took everything with him - you saw him carrying boxes upon boxes of his belongings with him.
was someone here recently?
you hop onto the chair to get a closer look. upon the table, there are pages of various sizes and colors, all seemingly important. you can't understand anything here, the text too small and incomprehensible to you.
all except for the map in the middle. the cabin is clearly marked, circled in red. and connected to that circle is a line, clearly moving towards a nearby village.
[[you recognize this village.]]nothing's left in the fireplace. not that anything ever was in the fireplace in the first place - you can't recall it ever being lit.
even on chillier nights, your friend avoided putting on the fire. that would require wood, and conserving the trees for research seemed more important. that, and he seemed nervous to see what would happen if he burnt any of the umber.
[[on a night as cold as this, part of you wishes for that risky flame.|HEAD INTO THE CABIN.]]you move towards the shoes by the door. large, black boots.
like the ones your friend used to wear. you try to find his scent, but you really can't tell who's these are. it's been a long while since anyone's used these.
you can remember running around the house and yard with them in your jaw, wagging your tail as he yelled after you. his tone was angry, but you were never punished for this. eventually he'd just give up and let you tear them apart.
[[you move to pick one up, but stop yourself. there's no point when no one's around to try and grab them from you.|HEAD INTO THE CABIN.]]your new friend(?) looks confused. he tilts his head, barking again. are you not going to stay? he jumps onto all fours, wagging his tail and yapping. it seems he wants to play.
[[PLAY WITH HIM.]]
[[MOVE ALONG.]]the wind blows harshly. staying out in the blizzard is not a good idea. he barks at you again.
even despite the cold, you feel a warmth inside, being around this stranger.
you begin to mimic his movements. he yaps happily, running in circles around you. you follow him, trotting along. you trip over a rotten stump and fall head first into the ground, snow covering you. your new friend begins to yip in amusement. he grabs a stick off the ground, beckoning you to chase him.
playing like this, you forget all about your previous quest. the snow isn't so bad, and with a new companion, surely you can make more progress when the two of you are satisfied.
[[the wind continues to blow.|ENDING 2:PLAY]]the wind blows hard yet again. you don't think you'll be able to stay. not if you want to find shelter.
you whine, hoping you'll get the point across. you need to move along, you can't stay just for some other dog. his gaze remains on you as you tread along.
you take a moment to look back, to see if the dog is still there. the snow blurs your vision, blending with his white coat.
[[it seems he's moved along as well.]]
you continue your way forward. you begin to wonder if you made a mistake - no matter how far you move along this path, only trees and dead bushes surround you. you don't know if you'll even find any shelter at this rate - even worse, though, is the risk of moving too closely too the pillars.

the temperature drops. the breeze grows harsher. it's hard to see anything out here at the pace of this snowfall.
the two of you are in no rush, though. you're more concerned with winning this game of tugging that you've begun.
you feel like a younger version of yourself. like you're back with your old friend again. the one who named you.
you think you could spend the rest of your days like this.

[[START.|intro]]upon further inspection, it doesn't look...too bad. you've had worse meals.
you open your jaw, wrapping it around an ear...

[[what a waste.|CONTINUE FORWARD.]]
you turn and follow your footprints. moving to the city is a worse fate than freezing. you've spent long enough in the forest, you know it deeply. you feel confident in your ability to find shelter in these woods.
your confidence does not shrink, even as the snowfall grows and your vision grows whiter.
you will find shelter in these woods.
you would rather risk death in these woods than a guaranteed one in the city.

[[if mean to dog, bad end]]the white dog does not do anything back, even as you grow more hostile. he seems...neutral. his ears lower, but that's all.
he then turns away. he trots back, paying you no mind as you growl and snarl.
it seems you're alone now.
good riddance.
[[time to keep going.|it seems he's moved along as well.]]
you would not follow your friend into the village. you wanted to remain away from others at all cost - you already made an exception for this stranger, you did not want to do so again. he wouldn't wait for you, leaving for hours or days at a time, doing...something here.
this is where his curiosities often brought him, the reason why he came here in the first place. all the research and writing and books and whatever else you couldn't comprehend all had to do with this place. and, from what you could tell, it was the reason why he left as well.
he came back one day, different. unfocused. anxious. scared. of what, you couldn't tell. you tried to communicate with him, find a way to let him know that you were right to avoid that place, that he was too big of an oaf to listen to you, but he wasn't listening. it was like he was a completely different person.
the next day, he rushed to make his way out of this forest. he didn't pay any mind to you. he was focused solely on getting out of here.
[[you haven't seen him since.]]the knot in your stomach grows tighter, the memories of this place, of him, too overwhelming. how dare he? has he come back to finish his studies? has he forgotten all about you? or has someone else come to finish his work, to replace him?
you no longer feel weary after your travel. an unrestlessness grows within you.
normally, you wouldn't dare move towards civilization, towards people. in this very moment, though, the only thing you can think about is finding answers.
[[HEAD TO THE VILLAGE.]]you exit the cabin and make your way towards the village. the air has only grown colder and you have to put in effort to not be blown backwards. you pay this no mind. you're only focused on this one thing.
as you grow closer, the knot in your stomach turns sour. your head pulses, ever so slightly - the air grows impossibly thicker. you're not used to such heavy effects, but you persist.
[[you won't be here for long anyways.]]
[[you finally arrive.]]the village resides in a thinner part of the forest. it is abandoned - technically. you can recall, in the very few times you came close by, some residents scattered throughout the emptied buildings. the population was very small, but enough to keep you away.
now, though, it seems totally empty. as you tread along the streets, the buildings look....worse for ware. several are falling apart. even more have completely collapsed, or on the verge of doing so. trash and rubble line the streets. as you hop over a tire, you wonder how anyone could have lived here - is this recent? could this have to do with your friends disappearance?
you hear a rummaging in one of the alleyways. you stop. is someone else here?
[[CHECK THE NOISE.]]
[[KEEP MOVING.]]you move to the alleyway to check the noise. it could be the person in the cabin. maybe even your friend.
you doubt this is the case, but it wouldn't hurt to check.
you stand at the entrance, and notice the strange body rummaging through the trashcans. it's similar to yours, but...wrong. in some way. their fur is practically non-existant, exposing a milky white skin beneath. bones jut out in all the wrong places. their tail wags rythemically, as if timed.
they notice your presence, and lift their head to you. they do not approach, simply watching. you're glad for this.
after staring each other down for a few moments, you decide to move along. the sick feeling in your stomach only intensified while looking at them.
[[they do not follow.]]you must be hearing things. besides, it's not your main concern right now. you need to keep going.
you feel sicker by the minute, the radiation of the area creeping up on you. you're not used to such a heavy feeling. you try to move past it, but you're not sure how much more of this you can take. you need to try and find the person who was in the cabin soon.
finally, you come across a large building. it's one of the few that haven't begun to fall apart.
this seems like a good place to investigate.
[[HEAD IN.]]as you walk, you feel sicker by the minute, the radiation of the area creeping up on you. you're not used to such a heavy feeling. you try to move past it, but you're not sure how much more of this you can take. you need to try and find the person who was in the cabin soon.
it doesn't help that there seems to be more of those weird dogs along the street.
finally, you come across a large building. it's one of the few that haven't begun to fall apart.
this seems like a good place to investigate.
[[HEAD IN.]]the entryway is completely wrecked. the rooms past seem to be in similar shape. the staircase is still in contact, leading to the next two floors.
you can feel your head pulsing, and it's getting harder to breathe clearly.
you don't have much time.
[[EXPLORE THE FIRST FLOOR.]]
[[EXPLORE THE SECOND FLOOR.]]
[[EXPLORE THE THIRD FLOOR.]]it's in a worse state than the entryway. furniture is overturned, trash and documents are thrown throughout. one of the rooms has a huge hole in the wall, looking into the main room. you try to navigate your way around, but some halls and rooms are blocked off. it seems everyone was in a hurry to escape. but why?
you continue looking around. no one's been here for a long while - probably not since your friend was here, at least.
you notice scratches on the furniture and dark stains as you explore. you don't think about it.
[[SECOND FLOOR.|EXPLORE THE SECOND FLOOR.]]
[[THIRD FLOOR.|EXPLORE THE THIRD FLOOR.]]the second floor is similar to the first - trashed and thrown around. the rooms are much smaller, they seem like personal spaces. the signs outside list the names of who each belongs to, but you don't understand.
you do see, though, your friends name - or what seems to be his name. similar writing to his personal documents and belongings is listed above.
you walk in. it's in a similar state to the other rooms. there's a weird...residue? on the floor. you sniff it, but it hits you hard. your head grows in pain. you gag and dry heave. you really, really need to get out of here soon.
[[SECOND FLOOR.|EXPLORE THE FIRST FLOOR.]]
[[THIRD FLOOR.|EXPLORE THE THIRD FLOOR.]]you climb all the way to the third floor. you really don't think this is a good idea anymore - you feel too ill, your head is too clouded. nothing is here anymore. this town is completely abandoned.
and yet, you have hope. maybe your friend will pop up. or you'll find answers to his departure.
this floor is...surprisingly empty. the wreckage from previous floors is gone. really - everything in this room is gone, even furniture that could've been in tact. was this not in use?
you sniff, looking for a sign of anything. you don't catch anything that stands out, just the old musk and dust that fills the rest of the space. the knot in your stomach's begun to slowly unwind. you feel like you wasted your time.
as you begun to head down, you hear a commotion behind you. something fell in the space.
[[INVESTIGATE.]]you trod to it, filled with a small burst of energy. could this be it...?
an empty bookshelf has fallen over.
a man stands at the end of the hallway.
your man. your friend. he smiles at you. he opens his arms wide. he's waiting for you.
you bark and yap, wagging your tail hard. you can't believe it! he came back! you jog over, but notice something's wrong.
he's always been pale, but his skin's nearly gray. the rest of his complexion is far too pale. his arms and legs are bent in weird ways, as if he wasn't meant to stand on two legs.
his smile's too wide. as if he was panting.
[[this is not your friend.]]there's no point. you're hearing things. no one is here. you might as well expel the rest of your energy trying to get out of here.
you exit the building and walk the streets. you notice canine-like creatures coming out to watch you, but you pay no mind. you're too upset with yourself to pay much attention.
you exit the village, with others following behind. you don't know where you're going. you don't think you care at this point. you just want to get out of here, as far away from this place as possible.
the cold wind encases you as you continue ahead. you welcome it.
(b4r:"solid","none","none")+(b4r-colour:white)[=
''ENDING 3: ABANDON.''
[[START.|start]]you turn. you begin to walk out.
he lowers onto all fours. and trots behind you.
[[SPEED UP.]]you sprint as fast as you can outside. it chases behind, mimicing the bark of a normal dog, calling to you. you run through the streets, trying to find your way out of the village through the intense snowfall. similar creatures move out of the shadows and buildings, seemingly following behind.
they don't want you to leave.
the air is too thick, you feel too sick. you know it's closing in behind you, you can hear their heavy panting growing in the distance. it feels like the village is closing in on you, streets narrowing and buildings creeping above.

(if:(history:) contains "BARK AT IT.")[[[is this how it ends?|ENDING 3: CAUGHT.]]]
(else:)[[[is this how it ends?|ENDING 3: CAUGHT.]]]you hear a bark ahead.
a natural one.
you slow down for a moment to try and see what's up ahead. beyond the heavy snow, you see a thick white figure on the outskirts.
you see the white dog from earlier.
he continues to bark and whine, anxiously. he's guiding you to the entrance.
[[he's waiting for you.]]
you can't go on. you've almost reached the entrance, you think, but your limbs are giving up on you. your lungs are too heavy, your headache too intense. you drop to the ground, panting heavily.
you can smell the sickly sweet scent of the creatures as they come up on you. they yap and yip, in their alien voices. you stare up at the sky. you know what's coming, but you can't seem to care anymore.
finally, your old friend catches up. he looks down on you, and grins again.
you knew coming here was a bad idea.

''ENDING 3: CAUGHT.''
[[START.|intro]]you use all of your willpower to speed up and catch up to him. the creatures behind scream and whine in their alien voices, trying to call for you. the human-dog from the building slows down, having exerted its energy. it calls for you, but you pay it no mind.

finally, you reach him. you drop to the ground, laying at his feet. you pant heavily, too tired to stand for now. he licks your nose again. he sits by you, offering warmth. he's so, so warm - it reminds you of the woolen blankets in the cabin.
here he'll wait, until you're able to stand again. you're not sure if you'll find shelter outside of the cabin and village at this rate, but perhaps your friend can help.
at the very least, the two of you have each other to keep company for the night.
