Nancy wakes up in the dark forest. The surrounding darkness is like an invisible curtain. Only the faint starlight can be seen through the gaps in the leaves. There were fragmentary memories blurred in front of her eyes, which seemed to be the scene of participating in the jungle adventure camping club, but the details disappeared in the darkness.
As she tried to stand up, she felt a sharp pain in her leg and she was injured.
The cold night wind gently brushed her face, and there was a deep rustling sound of branches and leaves in the forest, as if invisible eyes were observing her.
Suddenly, a woman's shrill scream came from a distance, breaking the silence. The sound echoed in the dark night, giving Nancy a chill. She plucked up the courage and moved quietly in the direction of the scream, arriving at a patch of dense grass. The sound was just in front of the grass.
The screaming stopped and was replaced by a group of teenagers arguing.
"Their voices sounded very confused. They must have lost their way...Should I go take a look?"

Nancy continues to move forward, and the arguing voices grow louder. At that moment, a boy from the group yells loudly,
"There's something moving, everyone be careful! Who's there? Come out!"
Nancy has no choice but to shout back, "Don't be afraid! I'm from the club too, just like you, separated from the group…"
She slowly emerges from the bushes, only to find a group of teenagers surrounding a woman on the ground, covered in blood and injuries. Nancy's presence leaves them momentarily stunned. One of the boys immediately points at her, accusing her of the attack. However, others quickly dismiss the idea.
"Are you stupid? Look at this girl; she doesn't have a drop of blood on her. Sandy's wounds clearly look like they were bitten. There are wild animals around here!"
"Shut up! Do you want us to die that badly?"
The teenagers fall into another round of arguments. From their conversation, Nancy learns that the woman lying on the ground, barely alive, is named Sandy, a leader from the camping club. The boy who misunderstood Nancy insists that carrying Sandy would be a burden on their journey, and the boat they have wouldn't accommodate an extra person. He shoots a suspicious glance at Nancy as he speaks.
Not wanting to get involved in the dispute, Nancy reaches an understanding with one of the girls and decides to rest with her. Before sleep, she feels once again the scrutinizing gaze of the boy, but she chooses to ignore it.
——————————————————
The next day, when Nancy wakes up, she finds complete silence around her. The teenagers have left, leaving behind an empty campsite. Tents, campfires, food, and equipment—all neatly packed and gone. Nancy realizes she is once again alone, facing an adventure full of uncertainties and dangers ahead.
Suddenly, the distant sound of a helicopter echoes through the air, filling Nancy with ecstatic hope. She realizes this is her chance for rescue. Ignoring the intense pain in her leg, she stands up, determined to head towards the source of the sound.
However, as she prepares to move, she notices Sandy lying on the ground nearby, abandoned by the young group. To her surprise, Sandy is still alive, barely hanging on. Sandy looks at Nancy, desperately wanting to plead for help, but she can't articulate words. Instead, she makes feeble sounds, attempting to lift her arm, only to let it fall back down.
Nancy, torn between the urgency of the approaching helicopter and Sandy's pleading eyes, understands that she faces a critical decision. The rescue window is narrow, and if she doesn't reach the riverbank within the next three minutes, the helicopter won't spot her.
It's a divine test: at this moment, the choice is between saving someone and saving herself, and she can only choose one.

Nancy is about to leave when her footsteps are heard by the group of teenagers. One of the boys shouts, "Something is moving, everyone be careful! Who's there? Come out!" Another boy echoes, "Come on, grab this stick! If it comes out, we'll beat it to death! Who's afraid?"
Nancy, frightened, feels that these young people are too impulsive, and joining them might not be of much help. Shouting loudly at night might attract more trouble than assistance. So, she decides to showcase her unique skill and starts imitating a cat's meow.
"Meow, meow, meow."
"It's just a cat. Should I go catch it for dinner? Hahaha!"
"Can you act like a human for once..." a girl says with resignation.
Feeling even more convinced of her decision, Nancy takes advantage of the group's inaction and quickly slips away.
As night falls, she finds a short tree, climbs up, and rests against it for a few hours. Though unafraid of falling, Nancy finds sleep elusive. Compared to the unknown dangers that might lurk on the ground, being in the tree feels relatively safer.
In a drowsy state, she envisions herself sleeping in her bed at home – sunlight streaming onto her blanket, the aroma of breakfast wafting from downstairs where her parents are cooking…
"I must survive and get out of here," she vows.
————————————————————————
The next day, Nancy is awakened by the sound of a helicopter.
Realizing this is her chance to be rescued, she hurries toward the source of the noise. She arrives at the location where the group of teenagers had been the day before, but suddenly, she sees a woman lying on the ground, covered in blood, barely clinging to life. The woman, upon noticing Nancy, attempts to cry for help, but all that comes out are feeble sounds, and her arm weakly rises and falls.
In the woman's eyes, Nancy sees a desperate plea for survival. The sound of the helicopter grows closer, and she knows that if she doesn't reach the riverbank within the next three minutes, the helicopter will likely miss her.
In this critical moment, it seems like a divine test—save the woman or save herself. The choice is between two urgent priorities.

The story takes place on the first night when the protagonists of //Dread game// camped alone after they separated from the main group (from UBC's CRWR 312 001, 2023/24WT1 with A.E. Osworth).
What people don't know is that there was actually another little girl who strayed into the forest that day. . .

Nancy sighs as she listens to the gradually decreasing sound of helicopters, takes a deep breath, and approaches the woman, whose consciousness seems hazy, her breath shallow. She gently pats her, but there is no response left in her.
Suddenly:
"This is Mike calling Leader Sandy. Sandy, you don't check in with headquarters last night. Is everything alright? What about the kids in your team? Over."
The voice emanates from a walkie-talkie strapped to the woman's waist. Nancy grabs it eagerly, thanking her lucky stars; this must be a reward for her acts of kindness.
"Hello? Hi! My name is Nancy, and I'm trapped in the mountains. Please, can you come and rescue me?" Her voice trembles as she utters those words, her eyes darting around the rugged terrain.
Mike clearly had a good sense of humor and was familiar with Sandy:
"Sandy, don't be so serious. Forgetting to check in last night isn't such a big deal. I won't report it to Clara either. You owe me a favor, you know! When you get back, remember to treat me to dinner!"
The signal here is very weak, and the voice from the walkie-talkie is intermittent, which might be why the person on the other end didn't notice the difference in voices. Nancy panics:
"I'm really not Sandy! Sandy has collapsed on the ground! Please come and rescue us!"
"Did you have a drink last night?"
"There's a monster or a killer in the jungle, I'm not sure, but Sandy is..."
"WHAT? Hahhahahhahaha! Oh, Sandy, thanks to your friend, you've got me laughing so hard early in the morning that my stomach hurts!"
[[I'm NOT! SANDY!!!]]
[[Yeah Mike... I'm Sandy, I was joking]](text-colour:#ad3434)[Run to the helicopter]
Exhausted and with her injured leg slowing her down, Nancy pushes herself to run as fast as she can. Despite her efforts, she stumbles several times and ultimately fails to catch up.
Accompanied by hunger, fatigue from a sleepless night, and fear of the unknown, Nancy collapses. Her breath comes in ragged gasps as she falls to her knees, tears streaming down her face.
“Only one option remains – crossing the river to reach the other side.”
In her mind, she repeats the mantra:
"Just keep moving in a square direction, and you'll find a way out."
In the midst of this struggle, memories of the woman flood Nancy's thoughts. The image of the woman lying on the ground stirs emotions within her. Nancy hesitates, a moment of internal conflict evident in her eyes.
"Should I go back and bring her with me?" Nancy wonders, her voice trembling. "Even if she's already gone, she deserves more than to be left behind like this."
"But whatever hurt her might still be lingering nearby. This forest seems vast and endless, and if I don't get out before dark, won't I be spending another night on edge? What if that monster, or whatever it is, comes to kill me? What should I do..."

[[Cross the river]](text-colour:#ad3434)[Cross the river]
In her heart, Nancy silently apologizes to the unfortunate woman and prays for a swift release from her pain, hoping she won't endure such suffering in the next life. After taking a deep breath, Nancy walks towards the calm, gently flowing river.
As she proceeds, Nancy suddenly steps into an unseen abyss, choking on a mouthful of water. She realizes the river is much deeper than she had imagined, with a cliff on one side and seemingly bottomless depths ahead, the water even colder than anticipated.
Fortunately, Nancy has learned to swim from a young age. Despite her fear, she overcomes it, using one leg and both arms to propel herself forward.
Suddenly, a sharp pain shoots through Nancy's leg. For a moment, she thinks her wound has torn open, but she soon realizes something has wrapped around her leg. Following that, an immense force pulls Nancy underwater...
With her head lowered in the water, Nancy glimpses the ugliest and dirtiest set of teeth she has ever seen in her life, along with the most terrifying gaze. It's a monstrous creature, larger than anything Nancy has ever imagined, its shape, texture of its skin, and the vibrations it emits underwater are beyond human comprehension.
Nancy is too frightened to utter a sound or move. Above the water, everything remains calm, disturbed only by the ripples caused by Nancy's last breath and the few bubbles formed as she resurfaces...
Feeling her body becoming increasingly heavy, as if cradling a lead ball sinking to the Earth's core, Nancy's consciousness fades due to lack of oxygen. The scenes before her eyes darken as she descends deeper into the water, until everything becomes indiscernible....
Suddenly, she hears her mother calling out to her. She opens her eyes to a warm, golden sunlight streaming in. Nancy realizes that everything she experienced just moments ago was a very long, very vivid dream. She is lying in the cozy bed in her room at home, inhaling the scent of sunshine and her dad's signature pancake breakfast. The water monster, the murder, getting lost—it was all fake.
But from this dream, she also begins to reflect on whether she should extend a helping hand when people genuinely need her, instead of walking away.

"Wow, why are you in such a hurry? Anyway, Chloe just called me. I have to go. Remember to send the report over. Let's go play some basketball when you're back the day after tomorrow. Over."
A wave of immense despair washes over Nancy. The heartless teenager, the departing helicopter, the infuriating colleagues—it all seems like retribution for her past misdeeds.
Now, what can she do?
Where should she go?
But she can't afford to stop. Even if there's the slightest glimmer of hope, she must fight with all her might.

//Thonburden City Morning News//
//Yesterday, the teenager Nancy, who was stranded in the forest, has been discharged from Thonburden City Hospital after a full recovery. After surviving alone in the jungle for five days with no tools or resources, Nancy was discovered by an expedition team from Base Camp Two on her self-rescue journey.
Nancy also immediately reported the disappearance of expedition leader Sandy and a group of teenagers, providing crucial information that enabled the authorities to locate the remaining missing individuals and secure the forest for further investigation into Sandy's case.
For safety reasons, Seek Adventure Base Camp will be temporarily closed and is under mandatory restructuring, possibly facing legal action in the future.
Finally, let's recap Nancy's incredible experience that she shared with everyone...

"All right, Mike, it's me, Sandy. But I'm trapped in the forest, and the kids have all gotten separated from me. I, am NOT, JOKING."
Mike finally comes to believe that Nancy (who he still thought was Sandy) is indeed in danger. He anxiously inquires about her location, and Nancy provides him with a rough idea of where she is. Relief washes over her as she hears Mike's determined voice, knowing that help is on the way.
Minutes feel like hours as Nancy listens to Mike's voice guiding the rescue team closer to her position. Then, the rescue helicopter comes into view through the thick forest canopy as a glimmer of hope. It hovers above the dense trees, sending gusts of wind and debris scattering in all directions.
Nancy and Sandy, whose live is hanging by a thread, are rescued. Later according to the police, a day later, they found the group of children Nancy met three kilometers away from this location.
As the helicopter soars into the sky, Nancy looks down at the treacherous terrain below; deep down.
To this day, no one knows how Sandy was killed and where the monster is.
However, she knows that this experience has changed her forever, strengthening her resolve to face adversity head-on and cherish the gift of life.
