About Azteca
The Estadio Azteca is a multi-purpose stadium located in Mexico City. It is the official home of the football club Club América and the Mexico national football team. The stadium sits at an altitude of 2,200 m (7,200 ft) above sea level. With an official capacity of 87,523, it is the largest stadium in Mexico and one of the largest in the world.
Regarded as one of the most famous and iconic football stadiums in the world, it is the first to have hosted two FIFA World Cup Finals: in 1970 and 1986. It was the venue for the "Game of the Century" (Italy vs. West Germany) and the "Hand of God" goal by Diego Maradona. The stadium has also hosted the 1968 Summer Olympics football tournament.
The massive concrete structure was designed by architects Pedro Ramírez Vázquez and Rafael Mijares Alcérreca. Its roof, which "hovers" over the stands, was designed to amplify the noise of the crowd, creating an overwhelming atmosphere for visiting teams. It remains a fortress for the Mexican national team, El Tri.
