A new little friend

Save your current project first if you want to keep a backup.

Any rectangular frame size, from 1 to 256 pixels per side.

Import a sprite sheet

1. Set the frame size

Enter the size of one frame, including transparent padding. Frames can be rectangular.

Margins and gaps between frames

2. Choose frames in playback order

Start at a row and column (both begin at 1). Frames run left to right and continue on the next row.

3. Choose what these frames do

Idle is required. Use Walk for movement, or choose a reaction that fits your asset.

Unchecked: add to the end of existing frames. Checked: replace them.

For several animations, add each one to the list. Adding the same animation again updates it.

If the frame size changes, other animations will be resized. You can undo the entire import.

Create your desktop companion

Draw a pet from scratch, or bring an existing PNG sprite sheet to life.

Draw and animate

  1. Choose New pet, name it, and set the size of one frame.
  2. Choose an animation on the left. Idle is required; other animations are optional.
  3. Draw with Pencil, Eraser, Fill, or Pick color. Add a blank Frame or Duplicate the current one and change it slightly.
  4. Adjust Speed (frames per second) and watch the live preview. Onion skin shows the previous frame to help line up movement.

Import your game asset

  1. Choose Import sprite sheet and open a PNG. Enter the width and height of one frame, rather than the whole image. For example, a 192 by 64 sheet might contain six 32 by 64 frames.
  2. Use Consecutive frames for a continuous sequence, or Choose individual frames to skip labels and blanks. Pick frames in the order they should play. Expand margins and gaps if your sheet has spacing.
  3. Choose the Deskling animation and speed. Your asset's run animation can become Walk; its resting animation can become Idle. Enable Replace to remove the starter frames.
  4. Import the selected frames directly, or use Add to import list for each animation and import the whole list. When a list exists, only the listed animations are imported.

Each animation supports up to 128 frames, with a frame size from 1 to 256 pixels per side. Reopen the importer to reuse the same PNG. Pending selections last until you close the page or choose another PNG.

Save and use your pet

Save project downloads an editable backup; Open project restores it. Your current project also saves automatically when browser storage is available.

Export .pet creates the file for Deskling. Open Deskling on your desktop and choose Import Pet. Save animation as PNG exports just the selected animation.

Creator is free to use. The Deskling desktop app is available on itch.io for a one-time A$2 purchase.

Browser storage can be cleared or unavailable in embedded pages. Use Save project to keep a backup. Offline use and installation depend on your browser and how the Creator is hosted.
